Core rule book says: "An animal companion is a loyal comrade who follows your orders without you needing to use Handle an Animal on it. Your animal companion has the minion trait, and it gains 2 actions during your turn if you use the Command an Animal action to command it; this is in place of the usual effects of Command an Animal. Does this mean RAW the companion is unable to use this advanced maneuver?Source Bestiary pg. 5. Each creature's rules appear in a stat block, with a structure similar to those of feats, spells, and magic items. Because creatures have more abilities than those game elements, however, their statistics include more entries, many of which have special formats. Click here for the full rules on Creatures.

The starting trained proficiency in Intimidation and +2 Cha make it much better at Demoralize than other Intimidation-trained companions (who start with 0 Cha), and even many playing characters: at 5th level, a mature Riding Drake …

Companion frailty mostly comes from their weird progression curve. A nimble wolf is rocking 6+2 hp per level for the first 7 levels, 6+3 from 8-13 and 6+4 from 14-20. They also don't get toughness. Compared to your typical thief starting with 8+3 and progressing to 8+5+1. Now, nimble companions still have good AC.

Cheers. Druid is the best imo if you just want the biggest, baddest companion you can get. Ranger shines when fighting alongside their companion, though, and I feel like they get the most out of their companions support moves. Really just depends on what kind of feel you want. Druids are more of a 'summoner' feel.Per RAW, every creature technically goes through death saves, but DMs are encouraged to not give death saves to unimportant enemies to keep the flow of combat and make housekeeping easier.
