Then they meet some grey aliens who also have played the video game and everything gets a LOT more complicated.

It's just bad. I'm sorry, but it is. First, on the most fundamental "does the story exist coherently" level, it makes mistakes. Repeatedly. Most notably, when the events of the huge wall of text that is page 222 are completely forgotten about the next time the area it took place in is drawn. There is no good explanation for how this happened. I did see an interesting theory at one point that since the lower blood trolls have shorter lifespans they evolved far faster than the higher bloods. If the trolls were originally a seadwelling race then it explains why the higher bloods remain so.
