If you rock some super trendy -30 offset wheels, you can rub with 265s. If you are running trd/trail wheels you can run most 285s with no lift.

The short answer is 32″. Our stock 4Runner has a 31″ tire (265/70R17 – 31.61″). Making the jump to a small 32″ tire should be fine on stock suspension. You want to make sure this is a smaller 32″ tire and not a larger 32″ tire. Some 32″ tires measure closer to 33″ tires.

Using stock backspacing, you can run both 275's and 285's with no lift and very minor to no rubbing. If you add wheel spacers, you are actually more likely to rub. Alignment is also important. HOWEVER, 285/70R17 tires calls for rim width range of 7.5-9" so technically minimum of 7.5" of rim width is required. I know trail edition and TRD Offroad wheel is 17x7.5" so it is safe.I find this strange since 285/70s are made in 16, 17, 18, and 19.5 sizes. Truthfully, a hypothetical 265/75 R17 tire would have virtually the same diameter as a 285/70 R17, but would fit better with less potential issues with rubbing.
