They are barely kept on life support with extremely dated and overcosted datasheets and their 4 expansion packs. For me Competitive 40k is about mastery of the game. It is about being able to get the absolute most out of any unit in the entire game. The competitive mindset to me is being able to get good, nail-biting games out of the worst factions, and jankiest lists.True competitive player are a tiny proportion of 40K players, if you start off with the mindset Warhammer is like chess you will be in for a shock - the randomness of rolling dice means any plan can be foiled by the dice. The current state of 40k rules and balance is strangling the casual play community AND the competitive community and the reduced table size is such an obvious pain point.
