The switchglaive was weak before in some of the betas, so if anything they fixed it but probably did too good a job. Then again idk, I haven't used it really. It seems good but technical somewhat too. Plus how does it fare early game? Odachi is good entire game, whereas something like the hatchets are sorta lousy early on. The SG might be similar.

Spear is perhaps tying up with Switchglaive as my favorite weapon in Nioh 2. With so many good skills, I think it's Team Ninja's pet weapon, lol! Anyway, try Red Demon or Warrior of the East, then add a second set like Mataza. Tried those and they kill it especially with the Twisting Spear skill. I'll do a video of my personal build soon.
Its offensive skill are really good (blade spin, reaper, renegade dragon), and the self buff skills are great too. Odachi: imagine Axe, but faster and longer reach. This is why Odachi is one of the most popular weapon in the game, especially for tanky build. Tonfa: Extremely fast and can put insane pressure on enemies.

The protection is pretty amazing in heavy yokai missions. You can also use those yokai urns to help buildup your shield. Also refreshes your Protection Talisman (sorta, its just your bonus “temp hp”). Fantastic for really light builds with high Constitution. The one where you spin around the enemy slashing at them is second best, good damage but slow and can proc status if done twice in a row. The 3 slashes one is good for preparing a glaive stance switch. Low stance repel projectiles is useful.
